PART 3

The Trial

Okay.

You Still can here. rescue me anytime now, Sal.

Is your necklace magic or is it just bling you wear so you can look like you have money?

Did you feel what I felt when we looked in each other’s eyes after you recited that poem or were you just looking for someone to tell you how gifted you are?

I will go to Oregon with you.

It doesn’t have to be Colorado.

Just get me out of here.

Have you ever wondered why they make these rooms white? Why do they make our classrooms white? Why do they make Santa red like Coke with a white beard? Is he really just an anagram for Satan? And why do they make hallways white? Why is Jesus white? Why did they call Obama Black even though he was half-white? Why do rednecks love white trucks and why do megachurches always use white vans for church field trips and why are hospitals always white? I think I get the red and I definitely understand why Wal-Mart, Exxon, and Wendy’s use red, white, and blue, but what’s the story with yellow? And why doesn’t anyone ever mention the fact that we wouldn’t have any stories about who we are if it wasn’t for all the black ink we carve into these white pages? Or am I just another white person wondering about something “colored people” have been talking about for years?

Dear Dad,

Is MJ an angel? Did you know all of this was going to happen? They took me to the county jail last night and put me in a small room and told me they were going to charge me as a terrorist for throwing a piece of a statue through the window of a bar, but then this cop with a dragon tattoo comes into the room and says, “Your godfather’s here.”

MJ comes in wearing a black mask with a cartoon blue bear in the center wearing an orange mask of its own. We got into his big white truck. He coughed as he was starting it up. He told me the cops called Mom, and Zach had Mom call MJ after they got into a big fight over me, but apparently Zach told Mom that Delphi was going crazy during the protest in a way that MJ had never seen, like it was some kind of miracle.

“I told your mom that her daughter was changing the history of the future,” MJ said as we passed by the cemetery under the moon and drove near the part of town where Mom’s Black boyfriend used to live. We were listening to country music. In the front yard of some stranger’s house, we passed a lit-up shrine with a plywood painting of Thomas Church, the man the cops killed in Chicago. In the picture, Church’s fingers formed a V for peace. Or maybe vendetta. There were red roses in the dead grass at the base like it was a cross, but it also looked like someone had shot a bullet hole through his face.
